Invitation to the conference

„Looks like museum, acts like gymnasium”

October 11, 2024

Location: Karilatsi Open-Air Museum

(Karilatsi, Kanepi Parish, Põlva County)

The autumn scientific conference of the Võru Institute focuses on museums and museum education. At the conference, answers are sought to the questions of how the local museum could best serve its people, the local community, and visitors from afar. If the subtype of a museum is ‘local’ or ‘rural’, it is to be expected that history and micro-history meet in it. The focus is on the great turns in history and people’s adaptation to them, on the one hand the state (unfortunately, often a foreign power) and on the other the community and family, the economy and livelihoods, cultural organization and self-activity, school organization and the best hopes for the child’s future.

What is the relationship between the local museum and the modern man, for whom a sense of patriotism for one place or another is less and less dependent on where he lives? What kind of experiential learning can teachers and museums offer together? Boring and clichéd, or a unique extension of family history: what kind of relationship is formed between a high school student and the local museum?

We welcome presentations (20 min for presentation and 10 min for discussion) that introduce different approaches to heritage preservation, discuss the interpretation of local heritage, museum pedagogy, good practices that have increased the visibility of the museum, and more. Presentations on topics related to Estonian and neighboring countries’ regional museums are warmly welcomed.

The keynote speakers are Ph.D. Mariann Raisma, director of the University of Tartu Museum, and museum educator MA Kaja Visnapuu.
